Unfortunately for Microsoft, with the plethora of performance issues Visual Studio has, their position is frankly indefensible. That took about three I've been a developer for 15 years and I can say Visual Studio environment is way better than anything available on Linux. A 64-bit processor and application is better faster, smaller code for processing 64-bit data elements or larger than an 8, 16 or 32 bit processor because it takes fewer instructions and steps. Neural networks, deep learning, genetic algorithms, rule-based emergence, symbolic processing — all of these emerging technologies and advancements, and much, much more, are all fairly accessible on the internet, and can be investigated further on a modern laptop thanks largely to Moore's law and, oh yeah, the Internet!! Come on guys, you can argue that staying 32 bit is smaller but then it actually becomes larger because you have to install tons more 32bit libraries to support legacy on our all shiny 64 bit systems.
